Technology: A Tool for Educational Innovation

Hyatt Hill Country Resort, November 2-5, 2003

Consider a world without the ability to measure time, visually magnify objects or print text. Technology is one of the most pervasive and enduring catalysts for change in society, culture and the economy. In just our lifetime, we have seen the creation of the personal computer, the Internet and the cell phone — all of which are transforming our professional and personal lives.

Now consider the impact technology has made on education. While it has been used to a certain extent in measuring student achievement, it has had minimal impact on curriculum standards and instructional pedagogy. It has not transformed many classrooms, teaching practices or learning while it has transformed many students lives outside of education.

One reason for this limited effect is a lack of dialog between district curriculum and instruction leaders and their counterparts in technology. In a survey done of model technology districts approximately 10 years ago, every district had a five-year technology plan to support the district’s curriculum and instruction plan. No district, however, actually had a five-year curriculum and instruction plan. Although improved, the situation is probably not much different today. This fundamental miscommunication cannot continue — particularly in light of the new requirements of the No Child Left Behind Act.

Syfr’s seminar Technology: A Tool for Educational Innovation is designed to create a dialog between senior district technology staff and curriculum and instruction administrators. The seminar will focus on using technology in curriculum acceleration and reform, instructional change, and formative and summative assessment to improve student learning and achievement.

This is a seminar you cannot afford to miss.

Registration is limited to sixty school districts or educational organizations. The registration fee covers all sessions, lodging, and meals, except for Monday and Tuesday breakfasts. The registration fee also includes pre-seminar and seminar materials, as well as post-seminar and web media products and services designed for use by registrants and their school district personnel. All of the above are included in the $1,375 registration fee. Attendees are welcome to bring a guest and guests are welcome at all sessions.
