2009 TASA/Syfr Conference
Tomorrow's Education in Today's Classrooms
TASA has challenged the state with a vision statement to move Texas schools into the future. Daniel Pink (A Whole New Mind) challenges us to think about "broad forces in the economy that are putting a premium on a very different approach to business.and life...and a very different set of abilities that are necessary to succeed."
These conferences look at what these abilities are, why they are important and how to improve student performance against today's standards while preparing for tomorrow's world.
Speakers from MIT, Harvard, Yale, Newsweek and other organizations will speak and discuss research, strategies and assessment to move schools from vision to application.

The Future of American Jobs; Ramifications for Public Education
There are enormous pressures on education to change, and understanding should frame the debate about what kind of changes we should make. These pressures range from 21st century skills demanded by the labor markets, to cultural flexibility in a global world, to addressing rising income gaps caused by a lack of education.

Following the three conferences is the Syfr Field Trip to 21st Century Companies. At least one person from each participating school district may go on the Syfr Field Trip on December 9, 10 and 11. These are trips to companies that have created or transformed industries. They are ESRI, an LA area company that dominates the GIS mapping market and has essentially redefined maps based on satellite technology. The second is Pixar, who created digital animation which revolutionized film, advertising, and eventually communications. The last is Autodesk, who transformed the design industry with three dimensional design and printing tools. There is a travel cost associated with the field trip but no additional registration fee. The fee is $1,490 if you require the three nights of lodging. Meals, except breakfast, are included in the fee.
